To encourage marine science leadership, and nurture future leader for marine science, WESTPAC established the “WESTPAC Outstanding Scientist Award” in 2014, and the “WESTPAC Best Young Scientist Award” in 2011.
WESTPAC Outstanding Scientist Award
On the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of WESTPAC, the “WESTPAC Outstanding Scientist Award 2014” was initiated at the 9th Symposium in recognition of those scientists who have not only made scientific achievements in their academic fields, but also provided leadership and made great contribution to WESTPAC marine science development.
WESTPAC Best Young Scientist Award
In order to assist young scientist to dedicate themselves to marine science, and observation, the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) decided to award four prizes to the young scientists at the 8th IOC/WESTPAC International Scientific Symposium (Busan, Republic of Korea, March 2011), two for the best oral presentation and two for the best poster. The four winners will be awarded the full financial support for their participation to the next IOC/WESTPAC International Scientific Symposium including the most economic roundtrip air ticket, food and local accommodations.

IOC's 50th Anniversary Certificate
As part of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), a commemorative IOC certificate was created to be given to an individual for his/her or its outstanding widely recognized contribution to the IOC activities in the WESTPAC region and to the promotion of the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) since its establishment in 1989.
